Fly Fishing NH's Connecticut Lakes Region

Upper Connecticut River and Androscoggin River Fishing Report: 6/20

That’s our good friend Denis Fay with a beauty of a brookie on the Androscoggin River late last week.  After all of the rain that we had early last week, the flow finally dropped on the Andro, allowing for nearly ideal drifting conditions out there for Jon Howe and his clients.

The Connecticut River’s flows have remained nearly identical too, and it appears as though we have a stretch of decent weather over the coming week, so we should be in good shape coming up.

The big news this week is that the Trophy Stretch between First Connecticut Lake and Lake Francis was stocked yesterday with brookies and rainbows – and needless to say, quite a few of our guests had lots of action on the old Trophy.  The fishing south of Murphy Dam continues to be solid as well – lots of caddis and mayfly hatches, seemingly coming off at all times of the day too.

No hex hatch on Back Lake to report yet, but the lake temperature has come up quite a bit just in the last few days. On Sunday night the water temp was a cool 58 degrees, but today it is reportedly up to 68 degrees. A few more warm days might be what’s needed to trigger the hex hatch, which is what we’ve all been waiting for. In the meantime, there have been cahills and some darker mayflies coming off (a smattering of brown drakes perhaps?), and don’t forget the black and brown caddis that come off almost every night out there too. Last night there were a lot of fish working from 7:30 til dark, but the hex was not the item on their menu apparently …

The outer ponds continue to produce as well, and the cool, damp weather that we had previously has helped out tremendously, keeping the water temperatures good for brook trout. Get out there in the morning or the evening and you’re bound to get in to some hungry brookies.

Give us a call at 1-800-835-6343 if you need a place to lay your head – we have a few openings over the next week, or just stop in at the end of of your day for a cold one!
