That’s Chris Farley as “El Niño” from an old Saturday Night Live sketch, and it certainly is living up to its reputation lately. Warming waters in the Pacific Ocean have translated in to very average temperatures to this point in the summer for us in the eastern U.S., and a seemingly unending rainy and overcast weather pattern, but it looks like it will warm up, especially in August. Will this mean more sun in the upcoming months? Hopefully …
Maybe it’s beginning, but if it is, we have a long way to go before the hex hatch is robust on Back Lake. Just a lone hex here and there on the boat house and lodge the last couple of days, and a stretch of warm(er) weather would help get things going. Let’s hope it starts soon …
We’re in the tail end of the annual hex hatch on Back Lake, folks. While there were still some hexes coming off near dark last night, it sounded as though the numbers of hexes on the water were more sporadic than it had been earlier this week. There were still some nice trout caught by our guests though, so it was worth it, but there’s no doubt about it … the hex hatch will soon be at an end.
We’re about half way through the annual hexagenia hatch on Back Lake and it’s been a great one so far. It has been true to form for the most part – a smattering of hexes hatching early on in the evening, but the real hatch begins as the sun sinks behind the hills to the west. That bit of darkening sky seems to bring the hexagenia out in full force, and needless to say, it does the same thing with the trout and bass.
The hex hatch continues to march through its inevitable progression on Back Lake. We’ve had nights that I would classify as exceptional (Monday), a little bit of a let down (Tuesday), and surprisingly solid given the weather (Wednesday). It’s currently raining a bit out there now as the boats full of hopeful anglers head out on the lake this evening …
The weather sure has changed here in New Hampshire’s north country over the last two days. From temps in the mid-70’s last week to temps in the mid to high 40’s yesterday and today, with a healthy blow from the north. Yes, it feels more like May, or even October out there, as we have taken a brief break from summer.
