See You at the Show!

It’s that time of the fishing season, where you might be tying up your proven fly patterns, planning your next fishing excursion, or dreaming of hooking an acrobatic salmon or bully of a brown on a glorious summer day.

While it seems like fishing season is a distant memory, it is really just around the corner. The official opening of the fishing season on the Connecticut River may be in a couple of weeks, but we’re really five months away in northern New Hampshire, and this just might be the perfect time to talk fishing, or plan your next trip to our neck of the woods.

Connecticut River Flow Update: 8/12

River flows continue to moderate here on the upper Connecticut River in Pittsburg, but each thunderstorm has the potential for a reversal in this trend, so pay attention to the weather if you’ve got a trip north planned soon. At 296 CFS, the Bridge Pool is finally getting to a flow where it can be fished decently – just bring heavy nymphs and split shot.

Stuck

It’s been downright dreary lately in northern New Hampshire. Feels like that movie “Groundhog Day”, where Bill Murray wakes up unendingly each morning to relive events from the day before, and that’s how our weather has been: gray, rainy, sometimes cool or muggy, for what seems like days on end. In other words, it’s been good for fishing, but a change at some point would be nice …

Spring Has Sprung

Very sorry for the delay in submitting an updated post to the Fishing Blog. A litter of ten German Shorthaired Pointer pups has brought any hopes of spring fishing to a screeching halt for me, so I have been relying on the reports of guides and fishing friends for what’s been happening.

A New Season

We’re at the start of the trout fishing season yet again in New Hampshire, but that’s not altogether right. Fishing on the Connecticut River has been open since January 1, so some of us up here have been fishing right along through the mild winter that we just had. However, the season opens on all NH trout waters this Saturday, April 22.
