Don’t get excited – that’s a light cahill, not the hexagenia that we’ve all been waiting for. Seems that the arrival of the hex at Back lake in Pittsburg NH has been delayed this year, due mostly to our incredibly rainy and cold start to summer.

The current lake temperature as of last night was 58 degrees, which is much colder than normal, and has stalled the kick off of the hex hatch, but there was still good action on the lake last night when the rain held off for a couple of hours.

I witnessed some light cahills coming off, as well as some other very small insects (appeared to be midges?) that the trout and bass were keying in on. Lots of cruising dorsals last night, and even some really strong takes ( a small Usual worked the best for me), and there were a fair amount of fishermen out there having some success.

If you do fish the evening hatch on Back Lake, save yourself some work and bring along two rods – one with sink tip line for emergers and the other with floating line for dries – and bring a headlamp to stay out as late as possible (legally of course).

As always, the weather is the big factor for getting in some good evening fishing – we all hope for clear, calm weather for the evening hatch, but we haven’t had too much of that lately.

Hopefully we get some of that good weather soon!
