Fly Fishing NH's Connecticut Lakes Region

Pittsburg, NH Fishing Report: After the Flood Edition

That’s a picture taken by Ken Wilson on Sunday of the sign at the Lake Francis boat launch reminding snowmobilers that there’s actually a lake in front of them. For our purposes, it means that there’s a heck of a lot of water in the Connecticut Lakes right now.

The weather has improved over the last couple of days and the Connecticut River from West Stewartstown, NH going south is beginning to resume it’s normal form. As far as fishing the Connecticut River in Pittsburg NH goes, we have some different situations in the three stretches.

Magalloway – the flow has currently come down to 525 CFS (was 922 on Monday), so there may be some salmon up near the Magalloway Bridge right now. Hopefully, I’ll have a report later today.

Trophy Stretch – the flow has held steady at 144 CFS, but there’s actually much more flow in this section, as there is water coming over the highest boards at First Lake Dam. What does this mean – fishable, especially if N.H. Fish & Game has stocked.

South Of Murphy Dam – the flow has been lowered to 1500 CFS (was 1800) in the last couple of days, but this is still a very fast flow, and impossible to fish and/or wade. We’re looking for something more like 500 CFS out of Murphy Dam.

The Androscoggin River is also reportedly getting better from last week’s rain events, but still is too high for fishing.

Good reports continue to come in about Back Lake, Third Connecticut LakeRound Pond, Coon Brook Bog and several of the other ponds.  This is the time to fish all of these spots, particularly in the evening when the trout are coming to the surface – this is what we wait all year for.

Road Conditions to the Outer Ponds:

Good: Round Pond, Moose Pond, Middle Pond, East Inlet

4 wheel drive recommended: Coon Brook Bog, Big Brook Bog, Terrell Dam

????: Boundary Pond (not sure, but it’s a long drive up there to go 10 miles and find a washout – as soon as I know something, I’ll post it).
