More Hexes ??

Yes, there is apparently another body of water in Pittsburg with a healthy Hexagenia Limbata hatch – Round Pond.

Once again, heard a bit of scuttlebutt this morning that there may be another place where the Great Leadwinged Drake is coming off, so it was time to check if the rumor was true.

It is.

The behemoths were breaking the surface at Round Pond with regularity tonight from about 7:30 PM onward – and there were some coming off an hour earlier as well. It became better as the surface smoothed out too.

The brook trout were enjoying the smorgasbord for most of the night, and while the Woodduck Heron was a good pattern for me, the Emma Nymph (which has been one of the best patterns during Back Lake’s hex hatch) was not, at least for me.

Perhaps the hatch is a little later here than Back Lake because of its depth and colder water – Round Pond has a maximum depth of around 40 feet or so, compared to 16 feet at Back Lake.

They looked much like our hexes – same size, and a mixture of colors – some were yellow, while the later hatching hexes were darker in color.

Who knows how long it will last? I would make it a point to go up there for an evening if you’re coming up this week however. Tall Timber guests can take out our row boat up on Round Pond, free of charge.

A whole year is a long wait …
