The Connecticut River rushes through Canaan, Vermont today as the rain continues unabated up here – nearly 4.5″ this week, and we still have a couple days of this weather left.  What has this all meant to pursuing trout and salmon in Pittsburg, NH you may ask?

So, the flows remain the same out of Second Lake Dam (193 CFS) and First Lake Dam (144 CFS), but expect swifter water in these sections from all of the rain runoff.

Things have changed dramatically out of Murphy Dam in the last two days (from 182 CFS to 1220 CFS this morning, with normal being 300 – 400 CFS), so this section is unfishable until it comes back down to at least 400 CFS.  The news is worse below the junction with Indian Stream – a whopping 2830 CFS at the gaging station there, and over 11,000 CFS in North Stratford, NH.  In short, it may take a while before we’re fishing the Connecticut River below Murphy Dam …

All of this means that the ponds and lakes are even better options  – Back Lake, Round Pond, Coon Brook Bog, and Third Connecticut Lake offer the best opportunities to catch fish right now.

Just bring some hot cocoa, mittens and a winter hat – there is a forecast for snow up here late tomorrow afternoon and evening.

Not kidding.
