Back Lake Hex Report: 6/28

The hex hatch continues here on Back Lake, though this year’s edition has been odd, to say the least.

Not only has it been somewhat sporadic, as the weather has once again determined the strength of the hatch, and the response of the trout to the hatch, but it has also come off heavier in parts of the lake where it hasn’t been so strong traditionally. For example, the NH Guides Lot has been the stage of choice for the hex hatch and the fish that pursue it over the years, as it was early last week. Then something happened – the amount of hexes coming off in that part of the lake decreased, but the cove down by Angler’s Cove and the Boat Launch saw boiling activity over the last few days. Needless to say, the nightly flotilla moved to that cove for a while, and the Guides Lot looked pretty quiet. Strange …

If you notice that the area you’re in isn’t producing, pull up your anchor and move to another spot on the lake that is. Change is GOOD …

The flies of choice remain the same. The top producers so far:

1. Woodduck Heron – top left in picture above.

2. A “BIG” Usual – middle right

3. Hex Cripple – top right. (This was Mickey Cunliffe’s bread and butter fly last weekend. He decimated the trout on Back Lake with it. Sorry Mick, the Dolphins still stink – find a QB)

4. Sexy Hex (not pictured), Hex Dun (bottom right), or Hex Spinner (bottom left)

We’ve only got a week left of the hex!!
