Back Lake Hex Hatch Update: 7/1

We’re in the tail end of the annual hex hatch on Back Lake, folks. While there were still some hexes coming off near dark last night, it sounded as though the numbers of hexes on the water were more sporadic than it had been earlier this week. There were still some nice trout caught by our guests though, so it was worth it, but there’s no doubt about it … the hex hatch will soon be at an end.

We’ll have 50 – 51 weeks before the next hatch happens, so there’s plenty of time to review this year’s edition. It was a good one by most accounts, with some exceptional trout caught (and lost) and more than a few beautiful evenings to cast out there. There also seemed to be less action on the bass this year, perhaps due to the cooler water temperature of Back Lake.

Tuesday turned out to be a good night out there – plenty of hexes coming off and fish actively feeding. Cindy and Jon did quite well while they were out there, especially with the rainbows and browns. A storm with particularly poor timing blew in on Wednesday night, dashing everyone’s hopes for a good night on the lake – a lot of long faces that evening. Last night saw a hatch, but not with the intensity that we saw earlier on in this most wonderful time of the year.

That’s how it goes – it will slowly dwindle out and sometimes that can take a bit of time (several weeks) before we’re not seeing hexagenia on the lake. Keep a few hex patterns in your fly box if you’re coming up in the next couple of weeks and put one on just before dark – perhaps you’ll get a good tug to get you ready for next year.
