Wait ten minutes. That’s the northern New England saying that seems to often apply to Pittsburg, NH. While it’s been a bit of a rollercoaster the last couple of days, it certainly has not been a “washout”.
Afternoon showers on Sunday cleared out late in the afternoon and led to more showers overnight Sunday / Monday morning. Clearing again yesterday morning, all was good until late yesterday afternoon, when some heavy showers moved through.
A hot, humid day on tap today, but clear for the most part, so it will be a good time to search for trout on the Connecticut River. More showers (sometimes heavy) are predicted for Wednesday and Thursday, but it looks it will start clearing up for a nice weekend ahead. If we do get the heavy showers, remember to fish above the junctions with major tributaries – the river often looks like a cup of coffee below those junctions after a hard rain.
Our fishing yesterday was warm but enjoyable, with Mickey and I each picking up a few fish (rainbows and brook trout) on Olive Soft Hackle Streamers. We fished the spots where you just know there are fish, and then we hit a few spots where it looked like there could be a fish. Well, those spots were occupied by fish – always satisfying to have your suspicions confirmed, at least occasionally. Makes you feel like you might just be an angler …
Tiny BWO’s, what appeared to be a couple of Light Cahills, and even a few stoneflies were present in the partly cloudy / drizzly conditions. More of the same weather is coming, so small BWO patterns should be in your arsenal when heading to the river – we have them at the Tall Timber Fly Shop if you need them.
See you on the water …

Thanks for this post, Tom! If thunder & lightning show up and I can’t get to shelter, I sit on the ground in the open if possible, lay my rod down 20-30 feet away…and say a little prayer! 🙂
