Fly Fishing NH's Connecticut Lakes Region

The Depths of … Winter?

Snowing for the last day and a half here, with last week’s July weather that we had just a distant memory. Back Lake has soft, slushy edges right now, with a slightly firmer middle, but it shouldn’t be too long now.The recent cool down (20s and 30s during the day, and ridiculously chilly at night) has meant that we’ve been taking care of mundane indoor work, you know the kind of stuff that should really get done before taking off on a vacation. So, not much time spent in waders lately.

This time of year brings us to contemplate the state of Back Lake’s ice, and more importantly, when it will finally vacate our neck of the woods. I prefer ice in my drinks, not on bodies of water where I like to fish.

“Ice Out” has varied widely over the last few years. In 2011 it was May 3, and it was April 10 (earliest ever) in 2010. For several years prior to that, it was consistently during the final week of April or the first few days of May.

Whenever it is, it will be early again this year, we think.

What do you think? We’ll have a contest for picking the date for ice out on our Facebook page – go over and check it out.

You just might win a little TTL swag!
