After an excruciatingly long wait, spring has finally arrived in northern New Hampshire. We’ve had two weeks of mostly spring-like temperatures and even some sun too, and the seemingly impregnable sheet of ice that had a hold of Back Lake has bid us “Adieu” for six or seven months.
It’s been a long, cold one all over the northeast this winter, but it seemed especially ridiculous up here in northern New England. In fact, we had some below zero temps just a couple of weeks ago, but it appears as though we may have turned the corner this week – it’s been beautiful to say the least.
That’s the Inlet at Lake Francis, and there’s a lot of water in the inlet right now … cold water, like 40 degree water. This has made for some challenging trout and salmon fishing, and a slow start to our fishing season.
The big fly box in our shop is stocked and ready to roll. Unfortunately, not too much to report on this opening day of the trout season in New Hampshire.
April Fools brought a beautiful, sunny spring day – perfect for restoring some of those much needed vitamin D levels, and getting out on the water in search of ginormous trout.
Snowing for the last day and a half here, with last week’s July weather that we had just a distant memory. Back Lake has soft, slushy edges right now, with a slightly firmer middle, but it shouldn’t be too long now.The recent cool down (20s and 30s during the day, and ridiculously chilly at night) has meant that we’ve been taking care of mundane indoor work, you know the kind of stuff that should really get done before taking off on a vacation. So, not much time spent in waders lately.
