Dave and Angus accompanied me on a fact finding mission today to the Trophy Stretch, to see if the recent rumors of a stocking truck were true. Indeed they were, as we all ended up catching rainbows immediately, mostly on nymphs and streamers. The flow is still at 300 CFS here – a little on the high side and caution should be taken when crossing the river right now, but there’s fish there, and the flow has actually helped spread the fish out around the river.
The best nymphs / emergrers for us were: BH gold ribbed hare’s ear, copper john, BH pheasant tail, hendrickson snowshoe emerger, though I think a lot of combinations of beadheads and soft hackle emergers would’ve worked as well. Throw some split shot above that BH and you should be able to get your flies down to their “level”. The best streamers for Angus and Dave were the garthside soft hackle and black ghost. The fish are in here at long last, and that, coupled with the trout and salmon coming up from Lake Francis, should make for some great angling on the Trophy Stretch.
Check out our Tall Timber Lodging Specials for this coming weekend. Give us a call at 1-800-835-6343 if you can make it up this weekend – it should be good …
