This is the time of year to finally get out on one of Pittsburg’s many outer ponds, if you haven’t already. Brook trout inhabit these places, some of which are of the native variety, and some of which are stocked by the N.H. Fish & Game Department. Each pond is unique, and at least one of them is sure to become your favorite.

Fishing the ponds is probably best done early in the morning before the sun gets high, or later in the evening when hatches are abundant and the sun is off the water. Dry fly casting to eager brookies is about as good as it gets, but throwing buggers and other streamers on sinking lines can also work well if you’re there during banker’s hours or when top water activity is stagnant.

Is there anything prettier than a native brook trout? No, I didn’t think so either …

Pittsburg and the surrounding area is blessed with a lot of them too, so there’s plenty of water to check out the next time you’re here. Some of them are relatively easy to access, while others definitely live up to the “remote” moniker.

Fly Fishing Only Outer Ponds:

Easy Access: Moose Pond, Terrell Dam, Big Brook Bog, Scott Bog, Clarksville Pond

Difficult Access: Boundary Pond, Perry Pond, Wright Pond

General Rules Outer Ponds:

Easy Access: Middle Pond, Round Pond, East Inlet, Moose Falls Flowage

Difficult Access: Carr Pond, Shehan Pond, Harris Pond

Needless to say, the ponds are perfect places to launch a canoe, kayak or float tube and have a go, but if you’re a Tall Timber guest there’s another way to enjoy some pond fishing.

We have row boats that are free for TTL guests to use at East Inlet, Round Pond, Big Brook Bog and Terrell Dam so far in 2019 (we haven’t been able to place our boats at Coon Brook Bog or Boundary Pond due to road conditions). Just reserve with us and we’ll set you up with all of the essentials for enjoying some time on one of the ponds.

They can be a great option to see some different scenery or when the lakes or river get too crowded the next time you’re in the north country.
