Congratulations, everybody – there’s strength in numbers, and we were able to get the Powers That Be to see the light regarding the type of brown trout and rainbow trout fishery we could have below Murphy Dam …

Our proposal to change the fishing rules from Murphy Dam south to the Route 114 bridge in West Stewartstown, N.H. was approved by the N.H. Fish & Game Commission this fall. We had a lot of help in getting this done and everyone should feel proud of their efforts in helping this amazing fishery become even better.

The new rule goes in to effect on January 1, 2016 and reads as follows:

PART Fis 408 CONNECTICUT RIVER RULES

Fis 408.02 Trout.

(a) The season for taking brook, brown or rainbow trout by all legal methods shall open on January 1 and close October 15, except in the portion of the river from Murphy Dam at Lake Francis downstream to the Rte 114 bridge from January 1st to the 4th Saturday in April, during which only single barbless hook, artificial lures/flies may be used.

(b) The daily bag limit for trout through open water shall be 5 fish or 5 lbs, except that:

(2) in the portion of the river from the Murphy Dam at Lake Francis downstream to the Rte 114 bridge, from January 1st to the 4th Saturday in April, all fish shall be immediately released.

Thanks again everybody for your support and we hope to enjoy this beautiful fishery for many years to come …

In other news, it gets pretty tough this time of year, when there’s no fishing going on up here … oh, wait … what’s that … oh yeah, there is some fishing going on!

A few of us have been plying the waters of Moore Reservoir near Littleton, N.H.(it remains open throughout the year for fishing), and we have been fortunate to have some great weather to do so lately.

This has meant going in search of northern pike (Esox Lucius), and we have been getting in to some of those big toothy critters over the last few weeks.

While we are far from experts, we are compiling loads of data to analyze in the years to come (not really, we’re just having a darn good time trying to find, and hook these wonderful fish) to produce a fly fishing for pike “how to” tome. More updates to come as we see fit.

This one was 30" - there are much larger fish out there!
