Fly Fishing NH's Connecticut Lakes Region

Connecticut River Fishing Report: 1/12

First day out there for the 2013 Connecticut River fishing season (it has been too darn cold so far!) and it was worth it.  Lots of water, lots of dead smelt on the shoreline, and even a curious brown trout made the first outing complete.

The gray soft hackle streamer, dead drifted, tricked Mr. Brown in to biting, and while he was not the largest fish I’ve ever caught, he may have been one of the fattest – the definition of “morbidly obese” for sure. The river side today had many unfortunate smelt that had strayed too close to Murphy Dam, sucking them through to become fodder for the lunkers prowling the depths. Apparently my brown had been having the time of his life up until that point, but he was released to continue his Orson Welles-esque training regimen …

OMR tried several different smelty patterns, to no avail, but it was a pretty nice day to be out there. Upper 30s and no wind made it pleasurable to stand in the water again, at least until the cold penetrated my waders and various layers. Flows are a little high for this time of year (nearly 500 CFS), but you can still get to the places you need to go.

Keep watching the weather and try to sneak up if you see a break in the normal winter temps!
