Fly Fishing NH's Connecticut Lakes Region

Fishing Update: 9/21

So, we’ve had some interesting weather the last couple of weeks. First, a lot of rain, followed by a period of beautiful weather, and now most days have contained at least a shower or too. At least it’s not snow …. yet.  The constant change in the weather has led to inconsistent fishing at times, but some of our guests have had great luck, on different water bodies in our North Country.

Back Lake: Trolling with small spinners or flies (yellow hornberg, muddler minnow) have been the best by far. One of our guests here right now caught 13 trout yesterday and 9 more today on a Colorado spinner. Mike Zimmerman, who was here for two weeks and just checked out on Sunday did great on the flies mentioned above. The water temp has cooled considerably, so the trout have picked up their feeding pace lately.

Connecticut River (all stretches): High water yesterday and today folks, so wading is difficult, and make sure you bring lots of split shot if you’re coming up this weekend. The good news is that the powers that be can only run the dams at these flows for a short time, and strong flows like this can often draw larger fish from the lakes in to the river. Let’s hope for that! Heavily weighted nymphs and streamers, and don’t forget the sink tip and full sink lines.

Androscoggin River:  OMR took float veterans Roger Turcotte and Charlie Stumb out on the Andro yesterday and had a great day. Forty fish reached the boat, and then thrown back to educate their buddies. What was the fly of choice? None other than the Pat’s Rubber Legs, which has been a great fly on our drifts on the Connecticut over the last two years. Good news for all that are going out with Jon this fall ( that means you, Mary and Susan!!).

Ponds and Bogs: The brookies are biting on a bunch of the outer ponds and bogs of Pittsburg, according to several of our guests that are here this week. Perhaps the best has been Coon Brook Bog, where Tom Montesi caught and released some very nice brookies yesterday and today. Cooler water has made all the difference for the fishing on the ponds, so it should be good for the remainder of the season.

The foliage is changing quickly too – we should have our peak in the next week or two.
