Connecticut River Update: 9/10

Today was a beautiful early fall day up here – crisp & sunny – very similar to that day ten years ago. Reflect on it, or say a prayer if you’re so inclined, as long as you remember it in some way.

Hey folks – another “better late than never” river update for you. The Trophy is flowing at a manageable 150 CFS the last few days, while the other stretches of the river are also on the low to medium side. We did get our share of rain from the last tropical storm, so the powers that be must be holding back our water up here in favor of reducing the flooding down stream from us. Expect a bump up in flows the next couple of weeks, which will be great for our fall salmon fishing.

As far as the fishing goes, some of our people this weekend have been doing very well again on dries – think CDC Caddis, Elk Hairs, and BWOs when the weather allows. Streamers such as the Gray Soft Hackle Streamer, Black Ghost, and Gray Ghost have also been doing well, but a Royal Coachman Streamer is usually a “go to” fly at this time on the Trophy as well. For nymphs, all the usual suspects are good to use right now: BH Prince, BH PT, BH Hydropsyche Czech, Soft Hackle PT, Hatching Pupa, San Juan Worm, Jailbird, etc. This isn’t rocket science right now up here – use the stuff that usually works for you, and you’ll probably be in to some fish.

Down river, the Connecticut is once again clear and moderate after the rains earlier this week – good news for those that prefer to attack the trout from the safety of a drift boat. Haven’t heard about the Androscoggin, but it should be in good shape again, especially after the next two days of beautiful weather come through.

Only 5 weeks left in the season!! This is the time to be here – ravenously hungry trout, comfortable temps, good river flows, and no biting insects – that’s as good as it gets!
