Back Lake Hex Hatch Update: 6/30

It’s the last day of June and the hexagenia hatch on Back Lake is really just beginning. It’s 7 – 10 days later than normal this year due to our cold spring. The hatch was getting better on Friday night, but then we had a string of heavy thunderstorms move through the area late yesterday, causing most to abandon their evening plans.

Back Lake Hex Hatch Update: 6/28

There was a smattering of hexagenia limbata (HEX!) coming off of Back Lake last night. That was the scuttlebutt from a few of our guests, and it was confirmed for me this morning when I found one lonely specimen on the door of our boat house.

Upper Connecticut River Fishing Report: 6/26

The fishing on the Connecticut River’s “Trophy Stretch” has been good for some (especially if you’re one of N.H. Guide Mickey Cunliffe’s clients), but difficult for others lately it seems. The river flow remains steady at 145 – 150 CFS in this section, as does the procession of anglers trying their luck.

Back Lake Fishing Report: 6/23

While our most anticipated guest (Mr. Hex) on the lake has not yet made an appearance, we are currently in the midst of two major insect hatches on Back Lake: Black Caddis and Brown Drakes. The picture of the brown drake above was taken this morning on our boat house.

Fishing the Outer Ponds

This is the time of year to finally get out on one of Pittsburg’s many outer ponds, if you haven’t already. Brook trout inhabit these places, some of which are of the native variety, and some of which are stocked by the N.H. Fish & Game Department. Each pond is unique, and at least one of them is sure to become your favorite.

Random Fishing Thoughts

It looks like northern New Hampshire has been spared the really heavy rainfall that some other areas in New England received yesterday and last night. We did get a bit over an inch of rain yesterday, but that’s not as bad as what was predicted. There’s a chance of showers today, but the wet weather has passed for the most part.
