Fly Fishing NH's Connecticut Lakes Region

Pittsburg Fishing Report 10/1/2012

There were lots of folks up this past weekend getting in their last few days of fishing before the close of the season. The big lakes, Lake Francis and all three Connecticut Lakes are now officially closed but Back Lake, the rivers and streams and the outer ponds are still open until the 15th.

Speaking of ponds, the new dam on Boundary Pond is now complete.

The Connecticut River has fished very well, and for some people, they experienced some of the best fishing of the season. I even heard a few say “the best fishing ever”. There were some anglers that struggled but that’s fishing.

Flies that took trout and salmon: BWO patterns like the Brooks Sprout, Almost Dun, Griffith’s Gnat, Hatching Pupa, Soft Hackle PT, Jail Bird and Bloom’s Soft Hackle.

Streamers to try at this time are: gray Soft Hackle Streamer and the Black Ghost. Great streamers in the fall.

Tom is still using the egg patterns and the Klinkhammer. He fished south of Murphy Dam a few days ago and did pretty good.  Bird Season started today, and Tom is booked solid this month guiding.

The Andro is fishing well also. OMR’s clients, Roger and Charlie had a 25+ fish day last Friday, nymphing with TH Flashback PT and trailing a Dirty Bird. It was a great day to be on the Andro. The foliage was spectacular, the fish cooperated, cigars were lit, lots of laughs and of course, a whole lot of BS. Thanks for the pictures Charlie.

Another flyfisher turned on to the Mighty Mo.

Our guest John Bosch sent this “grip & grin” shot of himself with one of his Missouri River rainbows.

Last week John and a buddy stayed at OMR’s Pelican Point Cabin on the Missouri River for several days. Their guide, Ben Hardy from Headhunters Fly Shop got them into lots of big rainbows and browns. They had a great trip.

If you are ever inclined to take a trip west for some really spectacular fishing, check out the Pelican Point Cabin.

As for Back Lake, the spin fishermen have been doing well with lures like the Colorado. Not a lot of boats out there lately though. I don’t know why. Fall fishing on Back Lake is usually very good.

Fourteen days and counting. Come on up. The fishing is good, we have openings and the Rainbow Grille is pumping out great food and adult beverages.

Hope to see you soon before it’s over.
