I know, I know, our blog posts have been scarce but as Tom said before “life sometimes gets in the way”. It’s called a wedding. Being the mother of the groom, I had the rehearsal dinner at my house and the bride’s family put on a spectacular wedding held at the lodge. Michael and his beautiful Molly were happily married this past Saturday. It was fantastic! Sorry folks but that took precedence.
Now, it’s down to fishing again. Jon and I hit the river below Murphy dam yesterday and had lots of fun. We tied on the Klinkhammer and the trout were liking it! We just got a fresh supply of Klinks from our fly tier/guide friend Chuck Kashner. The Klinkhammer is definitely a fly to have in your fly box.
Lots of flying ants around right now, and trout love ants, so that might be a pattern you might want to try too. Terrestrials are usually good in August. We saw caddis, Blue Wing Olives, Yellow Sallies and rising fish. It was really great to be in that cool water on a hot, humid day. Also, the wildflowers along the river bank are just beautiful right now.
I’ve been hearing good things about the Trophy Stretch. This morning I spoke with Lenny Mordarski who has been enjoying the fishing and hiking this week in the area. Len fished the head of the Skating Rink Pool and hooked several brookies on his favorite fly, the Hornberg. The day before, he and fishing buddy Charlie, had fun fishing East Inlet Brook.
Back Lake, even with the warm water temperature has been fishing OK. The western end of the lake seems to be producing better than the eastern end which is deeper. Go figure. Of course, the bass can be more prevalent but there are a few nice trout to keep things interesting. The Yellow Hornberg has been the top producing fly and the Golden Demon a close second. I’m still seeing a few big mayflies on the lodge windows in the morning.
I can’t believe it’s almost mid August, and we’re starting to see some of the leaves changing color. It all goes by so fast. I hope to see you soon.

Thinking about making a day trip to fish the rivers. I appreciate your suggestions. Thanks.

Hey Nelson,
I would suggest the Connecticut River south of Murphy Dam. The water temperature is cold, the flow is good and I’m hearing better fishing reports from that part of the river. Below West Stewartstown can be good too.
Jon and I fished the confluence of the CT. and Indian Stream last week and we did hook several on a CDC Caddis. You might want to try hoppers and ants also.
Good luck out there.
