Fishing goes on unabated up here, when the weather permits … The weather was great a couple of days ago – mid 50s, with some sun in the morning, then becoming quite cloudy in the afternoon – perfect weather for wading the water for some spring fishing. The melt has started, and it looks like it will really kick in next week – 40s and 50s all week, with possible 60s next weekend. The action should remain pretty good above the Connecticut River / Indian Stream junction – below that, expect some pretty muddy water coming down the Connecticut.
Cindy and Jon were at it again a couple of days ago, and while Jon had some luck with his rapala, oops I mean floating smelt fly, Cindy did very well on a goomie worm (first picture – see side of his mouth). The goomie is a western variation on a San Juan worm – think San Juan style, but rubber construction instead, and we carry them in the lodge fly shop. They seem to do pretty well, no matter when you use them or where you are.
Cindy’s one observation of these two rainbows was that they were both pretty fat – no doubt gorging on the smelt coming through the dam. She also had some action with a couple of browns too, so the fishing for a day in early March was pretty amazing.
They’re there – when are you going to go fishing??

My buddy and I were drawn to the Upper CT today by the great pics and descriptions found here. We stopped in to see Cindy, grabbed a few flies and got some friendly advice. We didn’t catch anything, but we had an awesome March day on the river. Thanks for your hospitality Cindy!

It was great to get those kinks out of my casting shoulder! Can’t wait to give those flys a chance to catch something again soon!
