Fly Fishing NH's Connecticut Lakes Region

Back Lake Report: 8/16

Casting to rising fish, whether they’re trout or bass is always fun, and when the skies finally cleared after two days of rain, the lake beckoned for another try. Pretty calm on the lake last night, so there were rises to be seen, though sporadic at times.

A CDC Caddis helped Mickey land three browns on top, and a few bass too – surprising for some of the warmer days that we’ve had over the last month. We had a hard time figuring what exactly it was that they were taking, though we saw a couple of large mayflies come off – hexes? Probably not, but exciting anyway. As it grew darker and more insects were flying around us, they looked like large midges, and a sprout style cripple may have worked the best (didn’t have any!). We sell them in the lodge though, so get a few before casting to rising fish on Back Lake in the evening – take my word for it.

Things are starting to change  – that long, slow slide in to fall is starting to happen. We’ve had a few crisp nights and mornings in the fifties, so the lake is beginning to cool. The trout should really be turned on in a couple of weeks and it will stay that way until the end in October. We’re less than two months from the end of the season – get up here if you haven’t already!
