Fly Fishing NH's Connecticut Lakes Region

Month: June 2010

Lots of smiling faces

The fishing is very good. Little Diamond is hot, the Alder Fly hatch is happening on the Andro, the Trophy and the No Kill are fishing well and the flows are great. Back Lake is awesome.

OMR did a few drifts this week on the Connecticut and everyone was happy.

Nice!!

What a difference a day makes…

Saturday night it was Yellow Drakes on Back Lake. Last night it was still Yellow Drakes AND Hexs. That’s about two weeks earlier than normal. This morning we found Hexs on the lodge, the log railings and the Fish Room. Jon and I did very well last night with a  Sparrow fly in tan and our guests the Gallant party,  fished Hex patterns and had a great night on Back Lake.

The dam flow on the Trophy Stretch was lowered this morning to 200 CFS  which is prime.

What are you waiting for? It’s time to take a couple of days off and go fishing. You deserve it!

OMR on NH Fish & Game Video

http://www.wildnh.com/broadcast/video_fishing.html Check out Jon and Mark Beauchesne of NH Fish & Game doing some spring fishing here in Pittsburg. The video was filmed this year in early May. Jon even got Mark into a salmon. Great job!

Lots of bugs!

Yellow Drakes. I found  these and  many more  on the lodge windows this morning. There are also Black Caddis, a smaller (16) Gray Caddis, Midges and I actually spotted my first Hex for this season. It’s the Yellow Drake Emerger that the fish are keying in on at the moment. I’ve been using  a Soft Hackle Pheasant Tail ( 10), a Partridge & Peacock or a Golden Demon and a few of our guests reported the “88” worked for them.  This is an evening hatch with lots of rising fish and there were rising fish this morning also. I love this time of year on Back Lake. It’s a little too early for Hexs, but you should have a few of these in your box just in case. Be Prepared!

OMR drifted the Connecticut River on Friday and they did very well. Again, lots of bugs and the fish were looking up. Top flies, the Slump Buster in the AM  and the Purple Haze in the PM.

There were lots of fish stocked in the area this past week. Back Lake and the Trophy Stretch for sure.  It’s dry fly time.

High water, big fish…

The higher water flow out of First Ct. Lake dam, a.k.a. the Trophy Stretch, has brought in some good size salmon from Lake Francis. Nymphs and streamers are working well but the trick is to get em down. You’ll need to add some extra split shot because of the higher water. OMR, Dave Poole and Angus have been guiding and getting their clients into some really nice fish. Our fly fishing school this past weekend went well but it was a little wet. Man, did it rain. Everyone caught fish under Angus’s tutelage.

The “No Kill” below Second Ct. Lake dam is also fishing well. If the higher water of the Trophy Stretch is a little too much for you, try the “No Kill” for native brookies and salmon. Check out the Falls in the River Trail which is part of the CT (Cohos Trail). Very cool.

Back Lake is still fishing well. I went out several evenings last week and there were a few Light Cahills coming off and rising fish. I did the best with a size 12 Soft Hackle Pheasant Tail. It’s  only going to get better and better and we all know what is just around the corner. Mr. Hex!

I’ve heard good things about  Coon Brook Bog and as I was heading to Colebrook this afternoon, there were two, yes two stocking trucks heading north. It should be a great weekend ahead. We will be hosting the Casting For Recovery Retreat again this weekend.  This group is always fun to have at the lodge.

Tom is back from chasing the little white ball in Myrtle Beach. No, No I know what your thinking and I’m not going there.

The Worm….

Yes, the San Juan Worm that’s what’s happening on the Trophy Stretch. Landlocked Salmon love the  worm!!   I’ve heard that Sulphurs have also been spotted.

Back Lake is seeing Brown Drakes, a few Light Cahills and lots of Black Caddis coming off.

Yellow Hornbergs  are flying out of the fly shop and our  long time guests, the Hartnett’s  Kaye and Uncle Art are experts at fishing Back Lake. Trolling a Yellow Hornberg  has been Art’s secret weapon. It should be a great week ahead.

Our first fly fishing school  is this coming weekend. We have four students signed up for the school and this could be your chance to learn what fly fishing is all about.  Give us a call to get more info.
