Fly Fishing NH's Connecticut Lakes Region

They’re back …

Looks like the annual “running of the salmon” is upon us in the Connecticut River between Second Connecticut Lake and First Connecticut Lake, at long last. It began sometime this past weekend, and it looks like we should have good salmon fishing for a couple of weeks, if mother nature cooperates.

The river flow is still relatively swift at 351 CFS as of this afternoon – wade carefully, as the height of First Connecticut Lake is very high. Streamers were working for a couple of our guides at the lodge, but we heard that some anglers were using nymphs as well. No reports on dries as of yet, but that could change if we ever get some warmer weather.

It was cold today in Pittsburg – constant snow flurries and temps in the mid 30’s, and it looks like we’re in for more unsettled weather right in to the weekend. The water temp is around 43 – 44 degrees, so it might be anytime that we’re catching them on top.

Recommended flies, straight off the Tall Timber Fishing Report board, are below:

Now, if you’ve looked at that picture, you probably noticed the flow numbers for the other dams. Yes, First Connecticut Lake Dam continues to flow at 800+ CFS and Murphy Dam at Lake Francis is at a whopping 1438 CFS. Too much water in both cases, so you may want to let things die down a bit before venturing in to those sections of the Connecticut River.

Still, the outer brook trout ponds are a solid option and Back Lake was stocked by N.H. Fish & Game last week, so the fishing should be good this weekend as the new arrivals adjust to their new digs. If you like to troll the big lakes, the salmon and laker fishing should be very good right now as well.

The season is upon us and the Rainbow Grille reopens for the summer / fall season this Thursday night. Join us for a great dinner and exchange some fish stories while you’re at it …
