Fly Fishing NH's Connecticut Lakes Region

Connecticut River Fishing Report: March 15

The angling on the Connecticut River in Pittsburg, N.H. continues to be consistent, for winter fishing that is. With the water temperature at a chilly 36 degrees, the trout are not exactly what we would consider “active”, but will take a properly presented fly in the right situation. They gotta eat, after all …

This absolutely stunning Connecticut River brown trout taped out at 23.5″ and hungrily took Chuck Degray’s Gray and Pink Soft Hackle Streamer (Chuck’s own creation, and I’m hoping he sends one my way) – it put up a terrific fight and had plenty of spirit when Chuck sent him on his way. One of the prettiest fish of the winter … so far.

The powers that be have reduced the flow this week to around 300 CFS out of Murphy Dam, due in part to a prediction of rain nearly every day this week. The fish are spooky right now, and while many are not “playing the game” like they do when there’s a higher flow, there are still a few out there feeding to keep it interesting. This flow also makes wading much easier, and crossing the river in certain points is definitely possible.

Nymphs and streamers are where it’s at – just keep chucking and ducking and maybe a monster will be on your line too.
