Fly Fishing NH's Connecticut Lakes Region

Mixed Bag

I could get used to having springs like this in the north country. It has been magnificent weather in general in the northeast, but it seems especially refreshing this year. We’ve probably had it coming after what we’ve had to deal with over the last year, and “spring” can be a very fickle mistress in northern New England – lots of sun and warmth one day, and snow the next …

Upper Connecticut River Fishing Report: 8/3

Some time on the Connecticut River in northern New Hampshire this week, exploring new water as well as some of the old “haunts”. Some sessions were productive and some were not – that’s the way it goes when you’re checking out new areas or spots that you really haven’t fished enough to know where the fish should be.

The Dreaded Offseason

December is a difficult month if you’re a fisherman … it’s the time of the year where we take stock of the season that just passed and look forward to the fishing season yet to come. A time for reflection in other words.

Here we go!!

The Hex Hatch has started.

Hexs have been spotted for several days now on Back Lake, and the hatch will only get more prolific as time goes on. It should start to get good by this weekend, and the weather for the weekend looks stellar, and it’s Father’s Day this Sunday.  Sounds like a win, win, win to me.

Is your fly box ready for the Hex Hatch? A properly stocked fly box for the Hex shouldn’t be without these patterns:

Woodduck Heron, Cripple Hex, Foam Hex, Emma Nymph, Sparrow, Usual, Sexy Hex, Hexagenia Dun and  a Hex Spinner. You need them, well we’ve got them.

A heavier tippet (2 & 3X) is necessary to cast these huge flies or you’ll have a totally twisted leader on your hands. Trust me, I know from experience.

The Connecticut River has fished well this week. Caddis hatches, Lt. Cahill and BWOs.  OMR has been busy guiding on the lower Connecticut, and nymphs and streamers have been productive.

We have a few openings for the weekend, so give us a call. A trip up to Tall Timber sure would make a great Father’s Day gift. Hint, hint….
