The fishing season here on the upper Connecticut River has begun, and there have been some nice trout caught and released so far in 2017. This beautiful brown was caught and released by NH fishing guide Mickey Cunliffe on opening day.
The angling on the Connecticut River in Pittsburg, N.H. continues to be consistent, for winter fishing that is. With the water temperature at a chilly 36 degrees, the trout are not exactly what we would consider “active”, but will take a properly presented fly in the right situation. They gotta eat, after all …
Long, puzzling looks from passersby are commonplace when you’re standing thigh deep in rushing water in the middle of winter – yes, you have to be slightly “off” to enjoy getting out there on the river in January, February or March.

The Upper Connecticut River continues to provide some solid winter angling these days, even with the river at a very low level. This morning’s rainbow (17″ and very healthy) was landed on a Goomie Worm, one of the best patterns to use up here, at any time of year.
Another mighty impressive fish landed by Chuck Degray of North Country Fly Shop yesterday – once again, Chuck’s Gray Soft Hackle Streamer did the trick.
