Fly Fishing NH's Connecticut Lakes Region

Something Different …

Pike on a 4 Weight

Pike on a 5 weight fly rod? You bet, so I was intrigued when a friend of mine asked me to pursue them on Jericho Lake, near Berlin, NH. When Bill handed me a “bite guard” 30 lb. test leader for my fly line, I suspected we were in trouble. It took us a while, but we finally located a couple of the toothy predators and got them to strike Bill’s hand tied “clouser-esque” flies. They put up a good struggle, with Bill landing a 5 pounder, while mine came in a little short of that. It was different and exciting, and another of my bucket list fishing goals has been accomplished, though it’s given me inspiration for future trips – this isn’t done by a long shot.

It’s Salmon time!

Yes, the salmon are in at First Connecticut Lake Inlet. The water flow is great and the water temperature is a cool 48 degrees. Perfect. OMR and I finally unpacked our fishing gear today from our Montana trip and wet a  line on the Connecticut. We’re sure glad we did.  Nymphs and emergers were definitely the way to go. We didn’t get any big salmon but that’s OK.

BH PT, Hatching Pupa, Anato May, BH Prince and a Snowshoe BWO Emerger. Pretty much the usual stuff we go to in the Spring.  It was a great night to be on the river, and we heard that on Tuesday with the overcast sky, the streamer fishing was really great.

Back Lake has fished very well this week. Lots of rainbows and some really big brookies in the 3 lbs + range. Trolling streamers with full sinking lines and also Rapalas have worked well.

It has been a cold Spring but things are really starting to heat up! We have openings this weekend and the Grille is open serving up some fabulous food and cool cocktails. Come on up!!

2011 Ice Out – May 3

Ice Went Out May 3, 2011 Ice Is Out ! May 3, 2011

Finally, that sheet of white stuff left our world last night. Yesterday I heard my first loon on the lake, so that makes it official: fishing is here for the next five and a half months. We’ll have boats in the water for this weekend to pursue all of those holdover trout.
