Fly Fishing NH's Connecticut Lakes Region

Month: May 2010

Lots of excitement around here….

The last couple of days we’ve had NH Fish & Game’s Mark Beauchesne,  and cameramen Jon Charpentier and Jason Philippy  here at the lodge video taping a new segment for their outdoor video series.

Today we spent several hours kayaking on Back Lake and yesterday OMR and Mark did a little salmon and trout fishing at the inlets and below Murphy Dam. They got into some salmon at Lake Francis Inlet, picking them up on Hatching Pupa and Soft Hackle Pheasant Tails and it was all caught on video. They didn’t do much at 1st Lake Inlet, but just as they were getting ready to leave,( 3:00 or so) the Blue Wings started popping and so were the fish.  OMR had a very successful morning today guiding at Lake Francis and again using those same flies. Water temperatures as of yesterday, 1st Lake Inlet 50 degrees and Lake Francis Inlet 44 degrees.

We are hearing  good reports on the inlets, and Round and Moose Ponds.  The spin fishermen are doing well on Back Lake and there were lots of rising fish last night and this morning.

We are short staffed at the Front Desk for a few days, so Tom and I are stuck holding down the fort. What a drag. All of you coming up this weekend should have great fishing and those of you thinking about it…Just Do It!!!

You thought the Stock Market went crazy?

You should have seen the weather in Pittsburg today. Dark ominous clouds, then driving rain, sleet, thunder and terrible wind. I don’t think I’ve ever seen Back Lake so rough as today. Our friends the Kellys were out on Back Lake enjoying some pretty good fishing, when all hell broke loose. They tried to make it back to shore but got caught.

As for the local fishing, Back Lake has been good, we’re hearing good things about the ponds (Round), the Trophy Stretch was slow for us this week and there are still fish in the inlets. It looks like our weekend weather will be interesting. They are even predicting some…I don’ t even want to say it.

It’s all good!

It turned out to be a really good weekend for the folks that came up to take advantage of the early season fishing action. Our friends the Wilsons did well just about everywhere they fished, the Logging Bridge Pool, Lake Francis Inlet and 1st CT Inlet off Magalloway Road. Lots of salmon and big brookies. Their #1 fly was the Tungsten Soft Hackle PT, and the Black Ghost and Gray Soft Hackle Streamer were  #2 & #3. They even picked up a few brookies off the dock.

OMR & I also fished 1st Inlet Saturday night and I happened to be in the right spot I guess. Three salmon on three different flies, an Anato May, Hatching Pupa and a Super Pupa.  OMR…Oh well.  OMR is out there as I write trying to out do me, even though I doubt I will ever beat his BIG brown. As I’m sure you all know, we’re quite competitive.

Back Lake was great for our guest Zack today. He trolled the lake with lures and his top lure was a gold Phoebe. He landed and released seven trout in about two hours. Way to go Zack!

News just in: OMR- 5 to 6 rainbows on the Anato May, Lake Francis Inlet. Damn… got me again!
