Spring fed and approximately 350 acres in size, Back Lake in Pittsburg, NH is one of the premier trout fishing lakes in northern New England.

It is two miles long and one mile wide with a primarily rocky bottom, averaging seven feet in depth, with the deepest point being seventeen feet. The lake has a lovely shoreline developed with private cottages and several lodges.

Our trout fishing season begins the fourth Saturday in April and continues through October 15th. Back Lake is classified as a trout pond and holds Brook, Brown and Rainbow Trout, Smallmouth and Largemouth Bass. The lake is well stocked with trout by the NH Fish & Game Department.

Tall Timber's fleet of well maintained 14 foot fiberglass boats are equipped with 6 horse, 4 stroke Yamaha motors, a full tank of gas, PFDs and comfortable seating, ensuring an enjoyable day on the water.

"Ice Out" traditionally occurs from late April to early May and trolling the lake is the preferred early season fishing method. Fly fishermen usually have success trolling a sinking fly line with streamer patterns such as the Grey Ghost, Royal Coachman, Mickey Finn and all colors of Woolybuggers, while spin fishermen troll lures such as the Super Duper, Sutton Spoon and Mepps. Live bait such as minnows and shiners are not allowed on Back Lake.

In the case of warm weather in May, expect some early dry fly fishing as trout cruise the shoreline, providing good fly fishing right in front of the Lodge. We have great mayfly and caddis hatches throughout the season. The Hexagenia hatch is the most anticipated hatch on the lake, occurring nightly from late June to mid-July. You may not hear a more exciting sound than that of a hungry trout slurping down your fly on a mirror-like night just before dark!

The fishing on Back Lake is consistent with different methods throughout the changing season. In the heat of the summer, fishing deep over the spring holes generally produces trout, while the cooler fall temperatures and spawning time combine to make the trout very active in September and October.

They're great for trolling, a stable platform for fly fishing, or for taking a leisurely ride around the lake.

We also maintain several aluminum row boats on the small outer ponds in Pittsburg.

Half day rentals can begin at sunrise and end at 2 pm, or begin at 2 pm and end at sunset.
