Remembering Jon

We all lost a good friend and fly fisherman this week. Jon Howe, our “Guide Emeritus” at Tall Timber, net man for his wife Cindy on their many fishing trips, and my brother-in-law, passed after a long illness. He was a special person – universally liked and respected by everyone that met him, either personally or professionally, and so his passing is a hard one for those of us that knew him.

One of Those Years

That’s Chris Farley as “El NiƱo” from an old Saturday Night Live sketch, and it certainly is living up to its reputation lately. Warming waters in the Pacific Ocean have translated in to very average temperatures to this point in the summer for us in the eastern U.S., and a seemingly unending rainy and overcast weather pattern, but it looks like it will warm up, especially in August. Will this mean more sun in the upcoming months? Hopefully …

The Start of Something?

Maybe it’s beginning, but if it is, we have a long way to go before the hex hatch is robust on Back Lake. Just a lone hex here and there on the boat house and lodge the last couple of days, and a stretch of warm(er) weather would help get things going. Let’s hope it starts soon …

Stuck

It’s been downright dreary lately in northern New Hampshire. Feels like that movie “Groundhog Day”, where Bill Murray wakes up unendingly each morning to relive events from the day before, and that’s how our weather has been: gray, rainy, sometimes cool or muggy, for what seems like days on end. In other words, it’s been good for fishing, but a change at some point would be nice …

Upper Connecticut River Fishing Report: 6/8

What a difference a week makes! From 85 – 90 degree, sunny and dry conditions last week to rainy and cold conditions this week, it’s done a complete 180 in fishing conditions for anglers. The fishing, especially on the Connecticut River, has been pretty good however, despite the change in the weather.
