Fly Fishing NH's Connecticut Lakes Region

Dog Is My Co-Pilot

Monty came along tonight for an evening of fishing on Back Lake, and while he isn’t the best at dropping the anchor when needed or netting a fish when it’s hauled close to the boat, he is amazingly adept at spotting rising fish, and whining incessantly when my casts are inadequate.

There were some hexes on the lake tonight, after a hot day in Pittsburg, but it was apparent to me that the hexagenia hatch is tapering off a bit. It’s not over (it never ends abruptly, it just kind of loses steam over a period of a week or two).

There were still some fish there playing the game, but they also seemed to be taking smaller flies, on the surface or just under it. Not sure yet what they were.

Two feisty rainbows made it to the boat tonight, but there simply weren’t as many trout around my boat tonight.

Working the middle of the lake, where the water is a bit deeper and cooler is the best option if you’re looking for trout. The most consistent action occurred from 8 PM until dark.

The bass are in towards shore, and very receptive to nearly anything, as you might expect. A fair amount of other anglers where out there tonight, and more than a few had some good luck, from what I could see and hear.
