Fly Fishing NH's Connecticut Lakes Region

Hex? You Betcha!

Yes, the Hexagenia Limbata hatch has begun at Back Lake, officially kicking off yesterday evening, June 21.

Some of our guests were out there when it all went down, and they did pretty well on the first night of the hatch. Perhaps the trout are extra keyed in on the flying behemoths when it kicks off – we have generally found that the first week of this two to three week event is the best.

The trout simply can’t get enough of them early on in the hatch.

The recommended plan of attack is to bring two rods – one rigged up with an emerger pattern (Woodduck Heron or Sparrow) and the other rod rigged up with your Hex dun of choice (there’s plenty to choose from, and we have all of them).

Use the emerger patterns early on in the evening, and then get out your other rod as the surface action gets hot later on. Remember to fish the middle of the lake where the cooler water is for trout, or else you’ll be Charlie Moore all night catching bass after bass if you stay too close to shore.

Don’t forget your flashlight if you’re staying out there late!

We have great weather coming for the weekend, so it should be a lot of fun out there.
