Fly Fishing NH's Connecticut Lakes Region

Upper Connecticut River Fishing Report: 7/4

Happy 4th of July everybody!

That’s a beauty of a brook trout that Griffin Nyhan is holding from last week – he’s an old pro at it now, and his dad Chip seems to be his personal photographer these days, chronicling Griffin’s angling adventures.

Griffin caught and released that lunker when he was fishing the Connecticut River’s “Trophy Stretch”, when the flow was right around 330 CFS (we’ve had our share of rain up here lately).

Good news is that the flows were reduced to a much more manageable 200 CFS for this weekend, so the Trophy Stretch is extremely fishable right now, with lots of fish in it.

Brookies, rainbows, and landlocked salmon are there in abundance – nymph rigs have been the best method of enticing fish to bite lately (BH Pheasant Tail, BH Prince, Mangy Caddis, Z-Wing Caddis, Hatching Pupa, and various soft hackle wets), but the slower flow may encourage the properly presented dry fly as well.

The flow below Murphy Dam has also been reduced, from 700 CFS earlier this week to 400 CFS now. That’s a great flow for fishermen and the fish that they pursue, so there is plenty of good water to explore if you’re coming up soon.

Back Lake Hex Hatch Update

We had another rough week of weather, where we had several nights of wind and rain, which aren’t generally conducive to good hex hatch fishing.

Thursday night was slow starting, but really turned on after 8:30 PM – it was hot for about 40 minutes for me, until a large trout decided that he was going to end my fishing early. Yes, he took my Emma Nymph, and it was just too dark to tie on another offering …

Friday night was also good for our fishermen, so get up here before it’s over for another year.

One more week of good hex hatch activity?

Maybe …
