The Great Autumn Brown Sedge, or October Caddis
The Great Autumn Brown Sedge, or October Caddis

We had an inquiry from a guest recently if the “October Caddis” had made it’s appearance yet in our area, and there was seemingly nothing to report until Saturday night. That’s when this specimen decided to start answering my phone at the lodge, while I was deep in discussion of fishy matters with several guests at the front desk. He hung around for a while, and confirmed that, yes, the October Caddis hatch has indeed started.

Truth be told, I had very little knowledge of this hatch, had heard only snippets of information about it over the years, and have never devoted any time to actually fishing for it (when the hatch comes off in early to mid autumn, I’m usually wandering around the grouse woods).

After some research, Cindy found this excellent article on the October Caddis –

Take a look, as it provides great information on the life cycle of the Great Autumn Brown Sedge and which patterns to use to mimic it.

The one curious thing about that caddis the other night was whether it came off Back Lake, or freeloaded in with a fisherman from the Connecticut River (more likely, based on the article) – we’ll have to find out for ourselves!
