Another class of fly fishing students graduated in to the world this weekend, thanks to the efforts of Angus, Alan and Dave. Everyone had a good time, studied hard, and some of them even landed a few trout, which, as we all know, is better on a fly rod!

As for the fishing action and activity up here, the Connecticut River has yielded a few rainbows in the Trophy Stretch – start at the logging bridge on Carr Ridge Road and work your way down toward Lake Francis. All of the typical patterns have been working in this stretch, though streamers and nymph rigs with soft hackle wets on the end may have been best.

There have been some wild brookies and salmon landed down below the Second Lake Dam – remember that those fish have to be released! The fish below Murphy Dam have been mighty tough lately, as they seem to develop a case of lock jaw from about 9 A.M. – 5 P.M. (take it from me, this is what’s happening). If you do ply your trade down below Murphy Dam, going very early or later in the day can improve your chances immensely.

The Connecticut Lakes have been fishing well this week, particularly for the lake trout fishermen using suckers. Third Connecticut Lake received a stocking of rainbows last week too, so that should help your odds of hooking up on that beautiful piece of water.

Some of the outer ponds have been very good lately as well – the best have been Round Pond and East Inlet (both were stocked with brook trout last week). The gates to Coon Brook Bog and Big Brook Bog are also open now, so those are two more beautiful places to check out from a canoe or kayak.

There’s plenty of fishing up here in Pittsburg right now, so stop in for some coffee, hot flies, and more fishing stories when you’re up!
