Fly Fishing NH's Connecticut Lakes Region

April 26 Pittsburg NH Fishing Report

The big fly box in our shop is stocked and ready to roll. Unfortunately, not too much to report on this opening day of the trout season in New Hampshire.

Pittsburg, NH continues to plod on toward spring, and while yesterday was one of those “I can’t believe how beautiful this is” spring days in northern New Hampshire, today is the opposite: cold, and increasingly rainy.

Back Lake still has a good amount of ice (still 20″ when we measured back on Monday), but hopefully it will be gone in 7 – 10 days from now. Some breakage along the shoreline, but that’s about it so far. Lake Francis has the big crack down the middle that tells us that we’re moving in the right direction, but expect the same length of time before it goes out.

Middle Pond and Moose Pond are usually the first bodies of water in town to go out, so there might be some activity going on over there.

The Connecticut River remains dirty below Murphy Dam, even though the flow is moderate at 350 CFS. We have heard of a few fishermen trying their luck at the Lake Francis Inlet, with mixed results. Water temps are still cold – 40 degrees or so, which is probably one of the reasons that the trout are taking so long to “wake up” form their winter slumber.
