Fly Fishing NH's Connecticut Lakes Region

Month: September 2010

It’s officially fall…

And it certainly looks it around here. We had a couple of cold nights this week and the foliage has changed dramatically. It’s not peak yet but it’s still beautiful.

OMR has been guiding  heavily this week, hitting the Andro, oh and hitting a moose. Yes, on his way home he unfortunately didn’t see a cow moose standing in the middle of Route 3, and he just couldn’t avoid it. I thank my lucky stars OMR made it through just fine but his vehicle and the moose, not so good. By the way, his day on the Andro was fantastic.  Roger Turcotte and Charlie Stumb landed lots of big brookies, mostly on Soft Hackle Pheasant Tails.

The Trophy has been very busy on the weekends, and I had heard the fishing had been a little tough but this week the crowds have decreased and the trout & salmon have been quite cooperative. BWOs, Caddis, Muddlers, and Streamers. It should be a good weekend.

Water temps are going down, and the fishing is picking up.

Now we just need the weather to change, and everything will be great. It’s been a little wet around here lately but fortunately Pittsburg’s forecast is looking great for the weekend.  Clear skies,  and temps in the mid fifties. Perfect autumn weather.

OMR did a few wade trips this week on the Trophy, and everyone caught fish.  The top fly was a Snowshoe Emerger BWO. They also picked up a few fish on Soft Hackle Streamers.   I’ve heard  a few salmon being caught on the Trophy, and there are fish in Lake Francis Inlet.  The fall salmon run is near.

Boundary Pond has been fishing well and you might want to try some of the other ponds like Terrell and Coon Brook Bog. It’s always fun to fish the ponds in the fall. Back Lake has been  good this week for the folks trolling full sinking fly lines.  Getting the fly down is key. Mickey Finn, Woolybuggers, and Muddlers. The Bald Eagle has been limiting out on the lake.  Awesome sight!

FYI – One month left of fishing season.  We have a few openings this weekend. Give us a call and we’ll set you up.

Fickle weather and fickle fish…

It’s been tough. The weather has been crazy. Sunny one minute, and then black clouds roll in followed by a downpour. The fish haven’t been too cooperative on the Connecticut either. Maybe the weather is getting to them too. Who knows. September always seems to be one of those transition months, but the cool weather is on it’s way, which will cool down the water temperatures.

Tony Cammarata had a very nice day last week on the Andro with OMR.  The Andro has been producing better than the Connecticut lately. The top fly on the Andro was an Olive Hare’s Ear and Tony got into some (24) nice brook trout. Great day.

Back Lake is fishing pretty well.  Our guests that are trolling with hardware are doing well, and had a good day catching  rainbows on the lake today.

You know there is only a little over a month left of fishing season. Boo Hoo!
