Fly Fishing NH's Connecticut Lakes Region

Month: August 2010

What a finish to a beautiful day…

It was in the 80’s today, and our forecast is saying several more days of the same. I’ll take it! Jon and I went out on the lake last night, and right at dark there was a massive hatch of midges and the trout were jumping out of the water. It took me awhile to find what they wanted but finally I tied on a Foam PT Emerger and that was the fly.  I had read that  as a midge emerges it hangs suspended in the film and that’s when trout take them. That fly does just that.

The Connecticut River water flows are still great.  Check out the links on the left for the current flows. The Trophy Stretch is fishing well. Jon guided last week and the top fly was a Soft Hackle Pheasant Tail as a dropper, behind a Tung Head PT. I also heard good things about Black Ghost.

Jon just got home from his drift on the Connecticut, and this is his report. On top, Flying Cinnamon Ants, down below, Olive Sculpzillas, and at the end of the day BWO’s in size 20.    Eight fish landed and another ten hooked.  They had a pretty good day. Now it’s time for a couple J & G.

Same old, same old…

The only change is water flows. The Trophy is up to 199 CFS, (still a good flow and might bring up some salmon) and the No-Kill is 220CFS.  It looks like they are lowering the lakes for spring run off. Murphy is still at 350 CFS.

Jon’s guide clients have been doing well, wading or drifting.  On the Trophy it’s been the same, Elk Hair Caddis, BWO, Nymphs, and Streamers.  Jon did a drift with Tom and a guest, Mickey Cunliff, and Tom put on a Skwala Nymph, and that was the fly. They hammered em. Crazy!

Back Lake is still producing. The kids are having a blast with the bass. Lots of action and that keeps the kids happy.

The leaves are changing color more and more every day. Fall is right around the corner.

A Little Bit of R & B…

Rainbows & Bass. That’s where it’s at on Back Lake. We still have a few Hexes coming off in the evening, and the surface water temperature is 72 degrees. Not bad for the middle of August. It was nice picking up a few fish stripping Soft Hackle Pheasant Tails and Sparrows.

The Connecticut River is still fishing well, from the No-Kill, to the Trophy Stretch, below Murphy Dam, and all the way down to Colebrook. OMR had several great drifts on the Connecticut last week fishing Hoppers and Red Ants. The Worm continues to catch fish on the Trophy, along with streamers, Elk Hair Caddis and BWO’s. The water flow on the Trophy Stretch has been increase to almost 150 CFS, which is perfect.

Hope to see you in Pittsburg.

B & B…

Brookies and Bass. Even with the heavy wind on Back Lake, we were able to find a sheltered spot, and get into a few fish Friday night using Soft Hackle Pheasant Tails. There were a few Hex’s coming off, along with some smaller mayflies. They’re predicting temperatures as low as 39 degrees for the next couple of nights, and with the wind, that should bring down the water temperature even more. According to our guests, they’re having good luck trolling  full sinking lines with hornbergs and woolybuggers.

The Trophy Stretch is still fishing well even with the lower flow of 100 CFS. OMR and I fished it on Thursday, and we did pretty well, especially OMR using the worm. But what really got me was when I got snagged and he offered to get it loose. Yep, he got it loose alright, and then took a cast with MY rod and nailed this gorgeous brookie. It was on a Soft Hackle Streamer by the way.

Rising trout again on Back Lake.

It was a beautiful night on Back Lake Saturday night.  A colorful sunset, no wind, and rising fish. It was just perfect. Jon, Charlie and I were out on the lake and we picked up 6+ rainbows, a few brookies and a brown on a Soft Hackle Pheasant Tail and a Crayfish Bugger. Back Lake’s surface water temperature has dropped 10 degrees this week due to the cooler days and nights. I bet the water temps have lowered on the outer ponds as well. They might be worth checking out for last bite.

Take a look at this Tricked Out Tall Timber boat.  A few of our guests like to add  some customization to their boat. Crazy!

The river fished pretty well this weekend, and the water flows are still great.  Flies to try; Elk Hair Caddis, Corn Fed Caddis, small Stimulators, Tung Head Pheasant Tail, Bead Head Dirty Bird, Hatching Pupa,  and streamers, like a Black Ghost and a Soft Hackle Streamer.  It should be a great week ahead. See you out there.
